Pelvic Floor dysfunction can occur in a wide variety of patient populations; however, postpartum women tend to be at a higher risk. Weakening of, damage to, or trauma in the lumbopelvic musculature can result in a number of symptoms; including but not limited to:
Constipation
Incontinence
Urgency
Pain/discomfort
Assessment of the hips, spine, core musculature, posture, and biomechanics will help to determine if physical therapy is an appropriate modality. Treatment may include:
Stretching and/or strengthening exercises
Corrective exercise for altered biomechanics in the case of adaptive shortening
Postural re-education
Coordination exercises
Biofeedback techniques
Appropriate modalities
